It’s funny; I always envisioned a road-trip to be full of ups and downs, spontaneous moments and adventure. Usually, expectations never quite meet reality. In this case, my vision couldn’t have been more true! We were only supposed to spend the night in Split, before embarking the ferry to the Island of Vis early in the morning.
We were raring to go, early in fact, making sure we got the car to the port an hour before departure. I knew that the port would be busy, I did not expect the utter chaos that came with it. We were stuck in a queue, in the baking heat, for around an hour & a half. This was before we were told the ferry was full and we couldn’t board it until the evening. There was nowhere to escape. Our car was stuck in the queue, so we had no choice but to make new plans. This felt like a real low, but in hindsight it was probably the best thing that could have happened!
So, with all our stuff in the car we quickly changed (as it hit 30 degrees) and decided to adventure around the centre of Split.
What to do in Split
We started our day by climbing the bell tower at the Cathedral of Saint Dominus. You can’t miss it, it’s the tall tower that looks over the old town and port. We paid a small fee to get in and climbed to the top. The stairs were narrow and steep but the views were worth the climb. A sea of terracotta rooftops fills the space, and a beautiful view of the ocean. The bell tower itself was pretty cool too. It had long windows that looked absolutely beautiful when the blue skies flooded through them.
We then wandered around Diocletian’s Palace and this is where some of the Game of Thrones scenes were filmed. As avid Game of Thrones fans, you can imagine how excited we were. It was a scorching hot day, so we sat on the steps in the shade for a little while. We just spoke about the trip so far and took in our surroundings.
It was so lovely just to roam the cobbled streets aimlessly, eating huge ice-creams and seeing all the little quirks that Split had to offer. I always fall in love with old towns. Throughout the day they just become more beautiful as the sunlight hits the buildings from different angles.
Beach in Split
As I was looking on my Croatia guide app, I came across a local beach (Bacvice Beach). It was only a 15 minute walk away from the centre. As it was so hot, we decided to quickly run back to the car, grab our swimsuits and head there for a swim. Luckily, the beach had changing rooms/toilets so we sorted ourselves out and headed to the sea. We climbed down into the sea and it was wonderfully refreshing. The sun was shining down on us, music was playing from the bar. We couldn’t believe that for a second day in a row we had found another random, totally amazing beach.
It started getting closer to the time that we were supposed to depart on the ferry and we couldn’t risk missing it again. We headed back to the port and in true roadtrip style hung our wet clothes to dry out of the car-doors! At this point it was really hot, and I had a little sunbathe before we had to leave.
Luckily, everything worked out in the end. We boarded ferry and watched the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen whilst drinking white wine. A real of example of when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!!
Have you ever had any crazy roadtrip moments? I’m sure there are plenty of stories to be shared!
